Bonitron’s M3345 Line Regeneration modules provide protection for AC adjustable speed drives from overvoltage faults due to regenerated voltage. Typical applications which involve regeneration to the drive are:
* Stopping high inertia loads such as saws, fans and centrifuges
* Eccentric loads such as slicers, punch presses, stamping operations, tumblers and dryers
* High cycle loads such as machine tool, stackers, and pick and place systems
Bonitron’s M3345 Regen module is used in applications with extended braking times, high horsepower, or where frequent regeneration occurs. In these applications, the Regen’s higher cost as compared with resistive braking is quickly offset. When a resistive absorber kit is used, the regenerated energy is dissipated as heat and the energy is wasted. When the M3345 Regen module is used, the regenerated energy is returned to the input AC line at 95% efficiency. Substantial energy savings results as the regenerated energy can now be used to power other equipment and the cooling requirements for the control room are reduced.
Widely applied, the modules are available in all voltages from 230 VAC to 575 VAC. Standard horsepower ratings are 3 to 100 hp. Use of slave modules permit up to 300 hp applications.
Darlington transistors are used to gate the energy back into the AC line. Unlike systems utilizing PWM carriers, the Bonitron M3345 Regen conducts throughout the cycle and features soft turnon/turn-off control to minimize harmonics. Power factor is near unity and no isolation transformers or input reactors are required.
The Regen DC bus is diode isolated from the drive DC bus. This ensures that the module will only conduct regenerated energy and minimizes any problems with drive ground fault detection circuitry. DC bus line inductance is used to limit dI/dt on the DC bus and to reduce the effect of surges on the DC bus.
