The SSTC-3.9 features a 32awg secondary coil giving the Tesla Coil a more compact size while sill delivering a huge punch. There has been a demand for higher beats per second (bps) so we answered these demands with controllable 0.5 through 5 bps arcs with a remote! Each beat lasts .0167s. That's 10's or 100's of times longer than any spark gap or DRSSTC, which creates huge bright arcs!!! At 5bps the arcs look constant to the eye. People also want long run times, and at low bps this Tesla Coil can go all day long, unlimited run times!
Many people have come to us asking for a simple to use, reliable and large Solid State Tesla Coil, and they got it, with over 100 SSTC-3's, 100 SSTC-3.7's and 100 SSTC-3.8' sold! Now the SSTC-3.9 is here with unlimited run times, compact sizee, beat per second controls, redesigned board and new all black boss enclosed housing! Tens of thousands of dollars and thousands of man hours have been put into this design, so that we offer a life time warranty. This solid state Tesla coil has attributes greater than any spark gap coil its size. It has bigger and brighter sparks, it's much safer, more reliable, lighter and runs on less power. It's just all around better than any Tesla Coil its size!
These sparks are bright white and purple/blue at the ends, the pictures really do no justice, its like having a Black light in the room, all white objects in the room flash and glow in the dark. These sparks off this SSTC are amazing, they just hum, like a helicopter flying by in the distance, remember there is no loud spark gap running like a chainsaw, just a soft hum. It really lights up a room, unlike a dim spark gap Tesla coil with sparks 1mm thin. The arcs are around 1"-1.5" thick at the base! In the picture to the left we hung a pyramid 40inches above the SSTC unit and some arcs hit it, while the rest reached 36" all around!
We have tested the SSTC-3.9 with runtimes over two hours, and the unit showed no signs of stress. The trick is to lower the power into the SSTC-3.9 by setting the remote to a low bps setting. The manual goes over bps settings and how to best use your SSTC-3.9.
The SSTC-3.9 is safer than even the smallest spark gap coil. Spark gap coils use thousands of volts at thousands of peak amps in their exposed primary coils making them very deadly. If one was to come even close to the primary an arc could reach out and be lethal. The SSTC-3.9 uses 200 volts at 10 amps peak, making a shock equivalent to that of a 120Vac wall outlet. Also the primary coil is insulated so that wires are not exposed. In fact, all of the wires in the SSTC-3.9 are enclosed or insulated and not left exposed or open, for safety.
Most spark gap coils are only safe to use for 20 or 30 seconds because long term damage is done to the neon sign transformers' (NST) secondary windings as they become hot from being shorted out, which they were not designed to do. While spark gap coils with NSTs can run for long periods, it is well known that their life and arc output dies over time as damage is done to the isolation of the secondary coils if they are run for extended periods of time while being shorted out. Due to this fact and because they are deadly if they arc to a person, it is law that all new NSTs have a ground short, so that if they do become shorted out they shut off.
This SSTC has no NST. The tesla coil is driven with all low voltages. Also it has no spark gap, which releases dangerous UV rays that can damage eyes, unless eye protection is worn.
Here are some pictures of the SSTC in action. The first picture is of a single 36" arc with a white sheet in the back glowing blue from the lightning. Then some pictures with a black back drop where the arcs shoot into the air followed by some pictures with the arcs hitting an object 40" away.

For the really dark pictures I had to remove the 6ft long fluorescent lights from the ceiling because the tesla coil is even strong enough to turn them on, as seen on the left.

On the left we have an inside look at the Solid State driving system for the tesla coil. The 3.5mm Jack plugs into the remote, where you control the bps. This is also how you turn the Tesla coil on and off. The fan keeps everything cool and is mounted to blow right over the four to-247 package Solid State transistors, with mounted heat sinks. Everything is mounted down firmly to the base. The base is 9.5"x9.5"x6.5" making it a very small and very light driving system.
Here is what the whole SSTC-3.9 looks like with remote, 6ft remote shielded cable, 120V 3-prong 25ft power cord, 7"x1.75" Al tape toroid, 6"x.25" discharge electrode, 18"x4.4" 27awg secondary coil. You wouldn't be getting the USC logo, just the other HV signs, unless you are with the USC physics department.
The remote was first used to solve a turn off logic problem with the PCB, but then we added the idea of bps controls. And now you can interact with the tesla coil. You can turn it on or off as fast as you want, flick the switch or turn the dial to any setting. If you pull 3.5mm male jack from the remote while the Tesla Coil is on, the Tesla Coil simply turns off. Adding an extension to the 6ft cord is no problem, being that Radio Shack or any electronics store sells this 3.5mm stereo cable, it's universal.
We test all of the SSTC many times to ensure quality. We also check and recheck all of our boards and secondary coils. We have a 700sqft spray booth we use for our secondary coils (yes EPA compliant). We evenly spray the secondary coils eight times with a poly varnish resulting in thick even shielding!
SSTCs are changing the face of Tesla coils. Transistors have put a whole new twist on what a Tesla Coil can do. A spark gap Tesla Coil with similar spark length would weigh 60-80lbs, and this SSTC tips the scales at just 12lbs!
If you have ever looked for a SSTC for sale you probably haven't found one. And if you wanted one you needed to have a background in electrical engineering and had a few months of time to set aside for research and construction. The reason you can't find a SSTC for sale anywhere is that SSTCs haven't been reliable, most of them have been put together by hobbyists in their spare time and not much time and money has been put down to explore the idea of making a professional reliable unit to sell over and over again to the public. Well, now JM Labs has done it. Up until now finding a reliable SSTC was near impossible for the average-Joe.
This SSTC runs off a small 1lb circuit board, giving it a huge advantage over a spark gap Tesla coil. This SSTC is very light and portable, so that than can be carried around by hand, not by dolly. As you can see the small circuit board is greater than that huge/dangerous neon sign transformer, spark gap and tank capacitor. This small board replaces all of it, and creates longer, safer and brighter lightning!
Lets compare the SSTC-3.9 to a standard spark gap coil with equivalent arc length.
20-30 seconds then long term NST wear
When comparing the SSTC-3.9 to an equivalent spark gap coil, the SSTC-3.9 wins in all categories except complexity. The same could be said with plasma HD flat screen TV verses an old black and white tube TV.
Another good thing about these SSTCs is that they release 95% less ozone than a spark gap Tesla coil. The spark gap itself is what releases most of the ozone, and these arcs burn hot, burning off O3 into O2. Because SSTCs have no spark gap, they are safer to use in small rooms for long periods of time without fear of that sweet smelling ozone making you sick.
So how does a Solid State Tesla Coil work?
The concept of moving from a spark gap Tesla coil to a solid state powered Tesla coil is simple. Basically the spark gap is replaced with a transistor/s. Transistors don't have moving parts like spark gaps, which don't really move in most cases, but the arc is considered to be a non-solid state component of a Tesla coil. A transistor is a solid state component, thus the name Solid State Tesla coil. The actual construction of a solid state Tesla coil is very complex compared to a spark gap Tesla coil and the drawings to the left are greatly simplified. The SSTC-3.9 works off a self driving system, which provides logic to the H-bridge, and then power is pulsed over the H-bridge via logic from a circuit board.
Shock your favorite action figure, shock a water bottle, or shock an Aluminum Can and watch the high voltage show! Turn on neon light bulbs without any fixture and wave them around and become Luke Skywalker, as they mysteriously turn on when near the Tesla Coil.

Q:Why does it have a discharge electrode on top?
A:The Arcs are so big relative to its size the arcs would travel right down the secondary coil to the ground if it didn't have a discharge electrode to keep the sparks going up.
